Repro:
1. Open Paint.NET on monitor 1
2. On new image, Create a 2nd layer
3. Open a browser on monitor 2
4. Browse to a website.
5. Windows Key + shift + S and take a screen capture on monitor 2.
6. Attempt to add new layer in PDN on monitor 1

At this point I have to click into PDN multiple times to get the Layers window to accept focus.

The Paint.NET icon appears to not be centered correctly in the taskbar and in the start menu leading to an odd appearance. No other icons have this particular issue as far as I can tell. My OCD apologizes for this report and would appreciate if it could be fixed at some point.

EDIT: I suppose this could be because of the brush (sorry I didn't notice that sooner) but it still creates an odd spacing appearance.

If this gif goes down: it is an image in MS Paint that is being copied and pasted into PDN, which reveals that everything has been tinted blue. The white picket fence is now a sky blue, and the sun is lime green. Selection in PDN is "escaped" on-screen to show it's not just the blue highlight of the select tool, although it looks similar.

I have double checked, this does NOT happen in any other configuration, such as:

- Pasting a PDN image into MSP (note that this does not un-blue it either: you can "stack" the effect by repeatedly pasting the same image back and forth, it only gets bluer in the one direction)

- Pasting a MSP image anywhere else (discord, imgur, other art programs)
- Copying an image from anywhere else (like snipping tool, browser, or other art programs) into PDN

- Making an image in MSP, saving it, and then opening the saved file in PDN

It is only this, and it has been happening for almost a year. I use both programs regularly and swap between them within a single project, so this has been pretty annoying for my workflow. I have tried searching around the forums but because both programs are called "paint", and "blue screens" are a common tech issue, I could find nothing. I hope it's just a setting I've missed somewhere!

To reproduce:

1. Open an image (I've gotten it to work with 5000x6000, 1920x1080, and 2x2)

2. Close it immediately

3. Repeat until bug occurs

4. Paint.net will now be not responding until you force close it

Every time I try to do the update to paint.net I'll either get this error message in the attached image or the other error message saying that Paint.net crashed during the installation process. my operating system is window 10. I currently have paint. net 5.1.9 and updating to 5.1.12, What I have done in the past here was to remove the current version I have been using and then just reinstall the updated version back on to my 1TB external hard drive. After that any plugin for Paint that were installed to the previous versions would then have to be reinstalled for to the updated version.

How do i fix this without enabling Onedrive again?

I submitted a feedback note through the interface last year, but in subsequent updates, this issue does not seem to have been fixed.

(Running Windows 11 x64)

insert it into a word document based on a template
save it as a .docx AND as a .pdf (word - save as - pdf)
send it to my HP Laserjet 4050N printer

very recently this consistently gives me a PCL XL error IllegalAttributeValue ReadImage.

I’m using piecemontee’s SF4 Asset Explorer to extract and reinject textures from the game archives. The original extracted DDS can be reinjected into the same slot without any problem.

However, if I open that same DDS in Paint.NET, replace the image, and save it again as DDS, SF4 Asset Explorer refuses to reinject it and shows this error:

“Invalid file size (must match target block size). Please export this DDS first to check its properties.”

So the archive/toolchain itself seems fine, and the problem only appears after Paint.NET re-saves the DDS.

What I tested:

• exact same canvas size: 1024x768

• flattened image

• BC1 / DXT1

• mipmaps off and on

• with mipmaps enabled, the saved file gets very close to the original size

• reinjection still fails

File sizes:

• original DDS: 524,576 bytes

• Paint.NET-saved DDS: 524,440 bytes

Another strange detail:

• GIMP opens the original DDS as 256x256, even though the texture previewed through piecemontee’s SF4 Asset Explorer corresponds to a 1024x768 stage image.

• That makes me suspect the original file may not be interpreted as a completely normal DDS by standard image editors, which may also explain why re-saved files are no longer reinjectable.

Because the original DDS round-trips correctly, my suspicion is that Paint.NET is writing a DDS that is technically valid, but not compatible enough with this older game/tool.

I also wanted to upload both the original DDS and the modified DDS for comparison, but the Paint.NET forum does not allow DDS attachments, so I can only describe the behavior and file sizes here.

I also tested NVIDIA Texture Tools Exporter. Just like Paint.NET and GIMP, it produces a BC1/DXT1 DDS at 512,440 bytes for 1024x768 with mipmaps. Since multiple tools produce the same result, but the original file is 524,576 bytes, it seems likely that the original DDS is not a completely standard BC1/DXT1 file and may contain extra legacy/header/padding data that common tools do not reproduce.

Is there any way to make Paint.NET preserve the original DDS structure more closely, especially for older DXT1 textures used by legacy games?

Update: I solved it by letting ChatGPT (in a hex editor) add 136 bytes to the dds file.

I used to work with Windows 7, but since the beginning of the year 2026, I am obliged to use Windows 10. Until yesterday March 22th, it seemed to work alright (except a great numbers of updatings).

But today, everytime I try to use BoltBait's plugin "Text Formations / Outlined", Paintnet crashes and proposes to start again.

How can I solve this problem, please?

Do you think I must install "BB plug paintnet\BoltBaitPack611"? I guess so, but I want to be sure that I will not make a great mistake.

It takes a little bit of effort but I can generally recreate that behavior like so:

1. Open Paint.NET

2. Create a lasso selection (Replace, No smothing) by dragging a circle counter-clockwise from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock, so it creates an about 108° closing straight.

3. Zoom in on the straight, e.g. zoom level 2700%

4. While holding Ctrl, drag an additional lasso selection into a straight-down part of the closing straight and let go.

5. Sometimes you can see it in the preview that a selection line is closing in on itself. Sometimes it gets resolved, sometimes it remains:

I am able to somewhat reliably produce these artifacts, here I did it on three consecutive sections in 7 attempts:

It seems to be unrelated to the actual coordinate and also the speed in which the mouse is dragged or released. I can get them with "flicks" as well as slow and deliberate mouse movements and button release.

I'm using Paint.NET 5.1.11.9445.2548 on Windows 10 64 bit.
